Heritage Action Calls on Senate to Pass 1991 and 2002 AUMF Repeals and Urges House Consideration
“Senators will soon vote on legislation that will repeal the outdated authorizations of military force (Authorizations for Use of Military Force - AUMFs) and reestablish Congress’s constitutional role in exercising its war authority power. Over the last several decades, Congress has allowed the executive branch to have nearly unchecked powers and unlimited authorities to act when it comes to the use of military force abroad. This constitutional reset would put Congress back in the drivers’ seat and force lawmakers to regain the muscle memory necessary to carry out its war powers and authorize military force in the future, which is especially important with the rising threat from adversaries like China, Russia, and North Korea.
