Syria warned the United States against any military action over a suspected poison gas attack in its civil war Sunday as the White House said there was “very little doubt” that a chemical weapon was used to kill civilians.

“U.S. military intervention will create a very serious fallout and a ball of fire that will inflame the Middle East,” said Syrian Information Minister Omran Zoabi, according to Reuters citing state news agency SANA.

The warning from Syria came as the U.S. signaled it was inching closer to a military intervention in the deadly conflict – spurred on by Wednesday’s alleged poison gas attack that reportedly killed hundreds of civilians in a Damascus suburb.

United Nations inspectors on Sunday were allowed to investigate the site of the alleged chemical weapons attack, but White House officials suggest it may have been too late.

A senior Obama administration official told NBC News Sunday there is “very little doubt” that a chemical weapon was involved.
