Casualties have been reported after Egyptian security forces attempted to clear two sit-in protests that have sprung up in Cairo in support of ousted President Mohammed Morsi.

Egypt’s interior ministry confirmed the deaths of two members of the security forces who were shot during the crackdown Wednesday morning. Five other policemen were injured by gunfire.

The operation began shortly after 7 a.m. local time, when Egyptian officials told the Associated Press that tear gas had been fired into the larger of the two demonstrations, located in the eastern Cairo neighborhood of Nasr City. The BBC reported that an armored bulldozer had been sent to the protest site outside the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque.
