Hungarian President Katalin Novák told world leaders this week that the demographic crisis from low birth rates and aging is a bigger threat to humanity than climate.

Novák joined other heads of state in addressing the opening of the 78th UN General Assembly. She warned, “A large part of the world is facing, in addition to war, a difficulty that is oppressing it from within. In Europe and in some of your countries the demographic winter has turned into an ice age. If you do not address this issue, it will have an immeasurable impact on our economies societies and security in the near future.”

Novak praised Tesla, SpaceLink, and X CEO Elon Musk for proposing that demographic decline is a bigger threat to humanity than the climate crisis. “Little attention is paid to the real and irreversible change in the world,” she said.

“If there is no child there is no future. What is the point of looking after the Earth if we don’t have children and grandchildren to pass it on to. If childlessness becomes widespread, if fewer children are born than those who pass away in our countries, our beloved world, which we believe to be secured, will be shattered,” she said.

Novak touted the work of her government to promote large families as the first of its kind in the world, including fiscal relief for large families as well as financial incentives for couples to have more children.

“We Hungarians see the solution to the demographic crisis in strengthening and supporting families. Our aim is to have a full and happy family life and to have all the children that young couples want,” she explained.

Novak also took aim at critics of her country’s pro-family policies.

“In the European system we are the ones who spend the most on family support. This has not destroyed the Hungarian economy. On the contrary, strengthening families is positive in economic terms,” she said.
