Fernando Villavicencio, a candidate in Ecuador’s presidential election, was shot dead at a campaign rally in the capital Quito on Wednesday, just 11 days before the first round of voting.

The death of Villavicencio, a vocal opponent of government corruption and drug trafficking groups, sparked outrage across the historically peaceful country, with President Guillermo Lasso saying early Thursday that the killing was “a political crime” that “will not go unpunished.”
