When he was selected to become pope, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was 78 and had led a full life already. He had been in the upper echelons of Vatican leadership for decades, known as a defender of the church’s most orthodox teachings. Before that, he had been a prominent academic theologian in his native Germany. And before that, like others of his generation, he grew up in the shadow of Nazi Germany.
