‘This is the right thing to do:’ Loudoun school board passes transgender student policy

The Loudoun County school board has voted to pass its policy regarding the treatment of transgender students Wednesday.

This comes as the board was expected to vote Tuesday evening on the controversial policy regarding the rights and treatment of transgender students. The board decided to take a recess and reconvene Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. and passed several amendments to the policy.

Policy 8040: Rights of Transgender and Gender-Expansive Students passed as amended 7-2. In addition, amending Section D of the policy to state, “All LCPS staff shall complete training” rather than just “mental health professionals” passed 8-1 with John Beatty voting no and creating single-use restrooms passed 9-0 while the five-year timeline for renovation passed 8-1 with King voting no.
