The letter that Aimee Stephens wrote to save her life also upended it, in more ways than she could have anticipated.

“Dear Friends and Co-Workers,” she began. “What I must tell you is very difficult for me and is taking all the courage I can muster.”

It was July 2013 when she sat down to write, a time when Stephens was still leading two separate lives: a woman at home, a man at work.
