What to Know: In recent days, CEOs from some large energy corporations are pledging to address climate change, at the behest of the pope.
“The CEO pledge followed a personal appeal by Pope Francis insisting the executives follow sound science to avert ‘a climate emergency’ that risks ‘perpetrating a brutal act of injustice towards the poor and future generations,’” Fortune magazine reports.
The TPPF Take: Care for the poor.
Forced energy poverty—which results in every other form of poverty—would be the real injustice to future generations.
“The movement over the past 200 years away from diffuse and unreliable wind, solar, water, and bioenergy and toward abundant and energy-dense fossil fuels has enabled the greatest reduction in poverty in human history,” says TPPF’s Kevin Roberts. “But there are still nearly a billion people worldwide who lack access to electricity and billions more who face some form of energy poverty. The policies endorsed by the Pope would restrict access to the energy resources that have brought so much prosperity.”
