The White House announced Thursday that 5% tariffs will be imposed on all Mexican imports starting next week, later increasing to 25% by October, unless “Mexico ‘steps up’ cooperation in stopping illegal immigration across our southern border,” Heritage experts James Carafano and Jack Spencer said in a statement. “Mexico can and should do more,” they write. However, they explain that “while Americans are greatly harmed by illegal immigration, these tariffs would only further punish our citizens, forcing them to pay more for basic goods and services every day—all because Washington has consistently failed to do its job.”
