What to Know: Left-leaning ice cream maker Ben & Jerry’s is going all in for the Green New Deal.

“Clearly, capitalism didn’t save us. It can’t even save itself—and while CEOs will probably be all right, what happens to the workers?” Ben & Jerry’s asks on its website. “What happens to the rest of us when they’ve dug up the last of the coal or drilled for the last of the oil? What’s the plan then? The drafters of the Green New Deal understand that climate change represents an existential threat, and they’re treating it like one. But they’re also treating it as an opportunity to transform our economy and make a just transition to clean energy—a transition that benefits everyone.”

The TPPF Take: Ben & Jerry’s gets it backward; capitalism—specifically, the innovation that free markets bring to the table—has led to the U.S. leading the world in clean air.

“American ingenuity, combined with affordable, reliable energy, has resulted in dramatic environmental progress,” says TPPF’s Jason Isaac. “The limitless potential of the free market and innovation, not government mandates and taxes, have driven both our economy and environment to dramatic success.”
