What to Know: Americans support prison reform and the Trump-backed FIRST STEP Act.

“A new survey shows wide support among registered voters for provisions in a major criminal justice bill in Congress, in sharp contrast to a survey promoted by a group of federal prosecutors released last week showing opposition to the bill,” Reason magazine reports. “According to a national survey of 1,234 registered voters conducted online between Oct. 11-12, 82 percent of respondents approved of the specific provisions in the FIRST STEP Act, a prison reform bill that passed the House by a wide bipartisan margin this May.”

The TPPF Take: The U.S. Senate should act quickly on the FIRST STEP Act.

“The hope for a second chance is a major thread in America’s founding principles and a huge theme in prison reform,” says TPPF’s Katie Greer. “Measures in the FIRST STEP Act aim to address inmates’ underlying issues – from a lack of education to a need for addiction treatment – to help them back on their feet outside of prison. This incredible opportunity to change lives and deliver second chances has not been lost on the faith community.”
