Tweet comes the morning after Justice Department names Ex-FBI Director Mueller as special counsel to run Russia probe.

President Donald Trump on Thursday morning decried “the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history,” the morning after the U.S. Justice Department appointed a special counsel to lead its inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

On Twitter, Mr. Trump said, “With all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration, there was never a special councel [sic] appointed!”

A few hours later, Mr. Trump deleted the original tweet and sent a new one correcting the spelling of “counsel.”

During the tenure of President Barack Obama, no special prosecutor nor independent counsel was appointed to investigate the White House.

Mr. Trump and his White House initially responded calmly to the appointment of a special counsel, issuing a statement Wednesday night from the president that did not directly refer to the development but said that he was confident that any investigation would confirm that “there was no collusion between my campaign and any foreign entity.”

But earlier on Wednesday, Mr. Trump addressed a graduation ceremony for cadets in the U.S. and told them that he believed he was being treated poorly over the questions surrounding his conversations with then-FBI director James Comey. Mr. Trump last week fired Mr. Comey, who was spearheading the Russia investigation.

“Look at the way I’ve been treated lately, especially by the media,” Mr. Trump said. “No politician in history has been treated more unfairly.

Thursday was the third consecutive morning that Mr. Trump had woken after big news had broken about his presidency the evening before.
