Voter Registration
Getting voters registered and to the polls on election day are critical to success during any election. In recent years complaints have been raised against both major political parties regarding inappropriate and even fraudulent registration and poll activities. The hottest registration issue revolves around voter ID. The left says it is discriminatory and depresses minority turnout. They attack those who dare to support voter ID laws as “anti-voting rights activists and voter fraud hucksters”. The right says we need to verify that each voter is legal and besides it is nonsense not to have to show an ID in this country to vote ... we do it for much less critical activities (such as, cash a check, drive a car, board an airplane, buy medicine, visit a doctor, get government assistance, etc). So, what is the real issue? Voter registration got a lot of attention during the 2008, 2012, 2014, 2016 & 2018 election season. We expect it will get a lot of attention before and during the 2020 election season.

The Issues of This Election Were Solved 15 years ago!

from The Gray Area:
11/23/20:

A blue ribbon, bi-partisan panel was convened in 2005, including people like former President Jimmy Carter (D), former Sen. Tom Daschle (D) and former Reagan Republican Secretary of State James Baker to investigate the problems and vulnerabilities in our election system and made an extensive series of recommendations for reforms.

This commission recommended:

that state voter registration databases be shared among the states to eliminate duplicate registrations.

states should implement a voter identification requirement to ensure that people presenting themselves at the polling place match the registration list;

stressed the importance of verifying that only citizens are voting, recommending that states obtain proof of citizenship before registering voters;

to stay away from mail-in voting because of the vulnerabilities to abuse & fraud;

and many other improvements that, if implemented, could have prevented a lot of the current frustration we’re experiencing today.

None were implemented!

A 2012 Pew study found that 24 million voter registrations in the U.S. were inaccurate, out of date or duplicates.

After Florida’s vote-counting debacle in the 2000 presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore, one would think that two decades would have given states plenty of time to get things right.

I was a member of the Commission on Federal Election Reform, which was chaired by former Democratic President Carter and former Reagan Republican Secretary of State James Baker. We investigated the problems and vulnerabilities in our election system and made an extensive series of recommendations for reforms. If the commission could get people on the left like former Sen. Tom Daschle and President Carter to agree with people on the right like Secretary Baker and me on these recommendations, you can be assured the recommendations weren’t about suppressing votes. They were about protecting the integrity of our elections. They were meant to give the American people confidence in election outcomes and the assurance that their vote meant something. The commission’s report was filled with practical solutions to many of the recurring problems we’ve seen in elections since 2005.
