Elon Musk’s Starship has made it into space. It is the biggest flying object ever made, and Mr. Musk proudly announced that Starship will make life multiplanetary. He’s right: Sooner or later, humanity will colonize other planets, like Mars. Or so we thought. There is a new threat to human existence, and that is the threat of man-made viruses–as we have all painfully discovered these past 4 years. COVID wasn’t particularly deadly, but the next lab-made virus might well kill us all before anyone sets foot on Mars. And we’re not even talking about deliberate release, which could also apply to nuclear weapons. We’re talking about accidental release—which is far, far more common than scientists and the media admit. We’ve looked at the numbers.
