HR 1-“For the People Act” Update 6/21/21: Number of Senate bill changed from S 1 to S.2093. Two years ago when Nancy Pelosi tried to ram through H.R. 1, a bill designed to rig the election system in favor of Democratic politicians by undermining America’s electoral process? Well, she’s at it again. H.R. 1—a bill dubiously titled the “For the People Act”—contains many provisions that are unhelpful, unnecessary, and unconstitutional: Gives taxpayer dollars to politicians to fund their reelection campaigns via a 6-to-1 matching program for small donations. Allows candidates to be paid a second salary out of their campaign funds…those same campaign funds that would now be funded with taxpayer dollars. Sabotages state voter ID laws by not requiring individuals to show identification. Mandates same-day registration that immediately requires states to register a person to vote upon request. Unconstitutionally requires states to restore the ability of felons to vote… even if those felons are convicted of voter fraud. Requires ballots be counted outside of the voter’s precinct, removing the integrity of the local government to verify voter rolls and oversee elections. Pelosi is planning a vote on H.R. 1 the 1st week of March.

Senate Republicans Block Democrats’ Election-Law Push

Senate Republicans blocked Democrats from moving ahead with elections legislation, forcing the party to devise a new way forward after weeks of intraparty wrangling and fruitless calls from progressives to advance the bill without GOP support. All 50 Democrats voted for the procedural measure, but it drew no GOP support, leaving it short of the 60 votes needed to overcome a Republican filibuster. Senate Rules Committee Chairman Amy Klobuchar (D., Minn.) said that the vote wasn’t the last word on the topic, and she pledged to hold hearings around the country in a bid to engage the public more broadly. “This is not the end of the line—this is only the beginning,” she said.

Signaling the importance of the effort to the White House, Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the Senate as the vote was tallied. The White House said President Biden and Democrats would continue to push the matter, without giving details. “It will be a fight of his presidency—long past today,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

But Democratic centrists, most prominently Sen. Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) and Arizona Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, have rejected ending the filibuster, though some have suggested ways to weaken it.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) said Democrats had long been pushing the measure in a bid to take over the administration of elections from states and potentially tilt outcomes in their favor. “It’s always been a plan to rewrite the ground rules of American politics,” he said.

A Monmouth University poll released Monday found that 80% of Americans support requiring voters to show photo identification to cast ballots.
