Like most people, I'd heard about the opioid epidemic. It was especially hard to get my mind around the statistic from 2016: almost as many deaths from drug overdoses as in all of America's recent wars combined.

The opioid crisis is the worst addition epidemic in US History. Drug overdoes kill nearly 64,000 people per year, and the nation's life expectancy has fallen for two years in a row. But statistics alone can't tell the story. On the pages of this magazine, James Nachtwey's images are paired with voices from Paul Moakley's interviews ... providing the visual record of a national emergency.
