Reversal follows Trump tweet contradicting administration’s statements that it had abandoned effort.

The Trump administration threw the 2020 census into further confusion, telling a federal judge the government was attempting to find a legal basis to reinstate the citizenship question blocked last week by the Supreme Court, a day after Justice Department lawyers said they had dropped the plan. “We at the Department of Justice have been instructed to examine whether there is a path forward, consistent with the Supreme Court’s decision, that would allow us to include the citizenship question on the census,” Assistant Attorney General Jody Hunt said in a teleconference Wednesday with Judge George Hazel and lawyers for organizations and individuals that successfully sued to block the question. The about-face followed President Trump’s tweet earlier Wednesday asserting that news accounts accurately reporting on-record Justice and Commerce department statements that the census forms would be printed with no citizenship question were “fake! We absolutely moving forward, as we must, because of the importance of the answer to this question.”
