High court’s conservative majority appears sympathetic to Trump administration; liberal justices voice opposition.

The Supreme Court appeared deeply divided on whether the Trump administration can ask U.S. residents on the 2020 census whether they are citizens, with the court’s conservative majority voicing skepticism of legal challengers who say adding the question is unlawful. The highly anticipated oral argument included more time—and more lawyers—than the usual case, but the justices appeared to have staked out firm views before the proceedings began, and over 80 minutes spent much of their time trading volleys with one another.
