instead of ‘equity’ make ‘competence’ our national priority?

Is Roseanne Barr a racist? Don't know. Don't think so. Appears to be a progressive person who just issued a bad joke.
But, her tweet was going to be easy fodder for the anti-Trump media to portray her as as racist and use her support of Donald Trump to link that gross politically correct generalization to him and everyone who supports him. Every comment about the Roseanne tweet says strong supporter of Trump. They discuss ad nauseum how this is a result of Trump. He sets the tone for this racism and white supremacy. According to Rush Limbaugh, did you ever hear of Harvey Weinstein, an avid Obama and Hillary supporter, being introduced as a Democrat funder, bundler, white house visitor, and his sexual misconduct represents all of Democrat party supporters.
Michelle Wolf's performance and attack on Trump Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders at the Correspondents Dinner is another example of the acceptable nature for bashing all around the President and especially those who voted for him.
And then there is this. Samantha Bee unimaginably the next day on TBS called Ivanka Trump a 'feckless "c"'. She gets to keep her job after writing an apology. But, then, the same network ownership hires and maintains such firebrands as Keith Olberman (ESPN) & Joy Behar (ABC), so what else should we expect. This does represent the blind hatred of Trump and Trump supporters, yet their media employers are so int eh tank they cannot see it, and worse support it. This is not about ABC's values as they said, except that their values begin and end with political ideology. They practice the credo, 'If you are with me I will make an excuse for you. If you don't, I will get you.' Do you really think that in this country you cannot hold a different opinion without being called a racist, homophobe, masaoginist, white supremacist etc.! The reaction to Roseanne was political, not moral. There are many examples, but the Samantha Bee move proves it.
