Donald Trump responded to the death of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro. The president-elect offered up a four-word tweet shortly after 8 a.m. Saturday: "Fidel Castro is dead!"

Trump followed that up a few hours later with a lengthier statement, where he called Castro a "brutal dictator" and said he hoped Castro's death gave Cuban Americans "the hope of one day soon seeing a free Cuba." "Fidel Castro's legacy is one of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental human rights," the statement said. "While Cuba remains a totalitarian island, it is my hope that today marks a move away from the horrors endured for too long, and toward a future in which the wonderful Cuban people finally live in the freedom they so richly deserve."

Miami Cuban refugees react within half an hour of the Cuban government's official announcement. Miami's Little Havana teemed with life — and cheers. Police blocked off streets leading to Cafe Versailles, the quintessential Cuban American hotspot where strong cafecitos — sweetened espresso — were as common as a harsh word about Fidel Castro. "Cuba si! Castro no!" they chanted, while others screamed "Cuba libre!" Celebration, not grief, permeated the atmosphere. That was no surprise.

Then, there was President Obama, attempting to hide his Marxist love for Fidel in noting that there were “countless ways in which Fidel Castro altered the course of individual lives, families, and of the Cuban nation.” The president left it to history to “record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him.”
