Newspapers (news & real life)
As the controversial song says, 'Don't Try That In A Small town'!
Dana Milbank, a far-left writer for the far-left Washington Post, wrote an article Friday (The country has come apart. Rural America has a cure.) about his experience after buying an old farm in rural Virginia. While I never agree with any political or national position taken by Mr. Milbank, he has discovered something very real and valuable as a result of his departure from 'the big city' of Washington D.C., and it is a very worthwhile read.
Mr. Milbank discusses local newspapers, vs big city newspapers; local news vs national news; community in local areas, vs polarization nationally. He observes regular people going about real life, discussing mundane activities in the local area, and mostly ignoring political differences (57% Trump voters).
For those who don't know, Virginia is predominately a red state. The state color voting map shows Northern Virginia (DC area), Richmond & the greater Norfolk area (the big cities in the state) as bastions of blue voters. Everywhere else is overwhelmingly red. Not unlike every other state in the country.
So why would a Trump-hating, city progressive move to a rural Trump area? - Escaping, as so many are, the violence, crime and nonsense of the city, maybe? - Looking for real life, maybe? - Looking for real people, maybe? - Surprised, but seemingly enjoying it, maybe?
Beware, this is happening everywhere. And, the question locals ask, or demand, is 'don't bring your failed politics here'! How you voted that destroyed your city or state, that you are trying to escape, you should leave there when you come here for safety, real life & community.
Unfortunately, my guess is that Mr. Milbank will continue to vote the same way in Rappahannock County.
Unrelated update regarding local newspapers, 8/14/23. Apparently even local newspapers are not off limits to 'gestapo tactics' from law enforcement. A Kansas newspaper, the Marion County Record, was raided by police, questions mount!
