12/31/12
The case has brought into the public eye a threat to women's security that is at odds with India's image of itself as a modernizing nation.
from The Wall Street Journal,
12/30/12:
The gang rape and death of a young Indian woman has sparked an outpouring of national grief and outrage, and a question: Will the tragedy prompt change, in laws and attitudes toward women, in the world's largest democracy?
The body of the victim, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, was flown to New Delhi on Sunday, where it was received by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi, president of the ruling Congress party, a government spokeswoman said. She was cremated a few hours later.
Details of the case have shaken the national conscience. Six men riding in a bus on the evening of Dec. 16 picked up the woman and her male companion, a 28-year-old software engineer, beat them as they drove around South Delhi for more than an hour, and stripped them before throwing them out of the vehicle, police said.
