Conservatives seem about to be crushed in Britain. Democrats should pay attention.

In June 2016, the Brexit referendum alerted us all to the rising power of populism and signaled that Donald Trump had a real chance of winning. Visiting Britain now on the eve of its general election, I felt I caught another glimpse of where politics is headed in advanced democracies. Democrats facing a resurgent Trump this fall should pay close attention.

No matter what poll you look at, the ruling Conservative Party appears headed for a catastrophic defeat. One poll in particular has captured everyone’s attention. Conducted by Savanta for the Telegraph, it predicts that Labour will beat the Conservatives (also known as the Tories) by 21 points. The polling firm’s analysis suggests Labour could win more than 500 seats (out of 650 in the House of Commons), with the Conservatives getting barely 50.

As Johnson presses Britain’s EU exit, a U.S.-U.K. deal is crucial.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced Wednesday he’ll suspend Parliament for several weeks, a move that increases the odds of a no-deal exit from the European Union. While Britain nears a messy Brexit—and America grapples with the economic fallout of President Trump ’s trade wars—the importance for both countries of a new bilateral trade deal looms ever larger. Mr. Johnson’s Parliament gambit—a longer than usual version of what’s known as “prorogation”—is causing consternation as “anti-democratic.” Yet the opponents of Brexit in Parliament want to override the majority of the British public who voted in the 2016 referendum to leave the EU. The mock concern for “democracy” by the anti-Brexit elites is something to behold.
