More than 50 tenured journalism professors from top universities have signed a letter calling on the New York Times to address questions about a major investigative report that described a “pattern of gender-based violence” in the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks on Israel.
The letter follows months of criticism and concerns raised by outside critics as well as some Times staffers about the credibility of its sourcing and the editorial process for the story.
The letter, signed by professors at colleges including New York University, the University of Pennsylvania, Emory and the University of Texas, asks the Times to “immediately commission a group of journalism experts to conduct a thorough and full independent review of the reporting....
Basically, The New York Times is under attack for believing reports from Israeli and other sources of sexual assaults on Oct. 7 and not believing Hamas' denials. In a November 12, 2023 report by The New York Times, they recognized the difficulty of getting straight answers from both parties in Israel & Gaza. For both Israelis and Palestinians, the casualty counts in the month long war between Israel and Hamas have become emotionally charged figures. The tolls have become symbols for the depth of the agony gripping both peoples, and partisans on either side have sought to play down the number of those killed on the opposite camp.This letter from '50 tenured journalists' is the American progressive attempt to keep that debate alive.
