Yes, this is an extreme headline, but exactly what I thought when I read this article in the Washington Post, The turtle moms that ‘talk’ to their eggs before they hatch .
I began to compare in my mind the reactions of human & arrau turtle mothers with regard to pregnancy and birth. Why do these arrau turtles talk to the babies in the egg and human mothers are just as likely to kill their babies in the womb as to talk to them? Curious, and frightening, when you consider humans are [supposed to be anyway} a higher level species. This is an astonishing thought. Why would a turtle want to protect their offspring and a higher level animal want to kill theirs? Maybe it has to do with the species. Turtles and humans are different. Different turtles don’t react the same to their offspring. Some lay eggs and then leave the babies to hatch and survive on their own. But, still, they don’t kill them. Humans, though, kill across the same species. If you stand two white American women beside each other, one is likely to have an abortion, and the other is likely to talk to her baby in the womb, like the arrau turtle. Same if you stand two black women, Asian women, Indian women, Native American women, albeit to differing degrees. Why? Is this nature or is it learned behavior? Just thinking.
