An Alabama man has been charged with attempted murder after gruesome pictures popped up online showing him pistol-whipping a Birmingham police detective during a routine traffic stop Friday morning.
According to AL.com, the incident started shortly after 11:00 a.m. Friday when the unnamed officer — who was in plain clothes and an unmarked car — stopped 34-year-old Janard Shamar Cunningham. The officer told Cunningham to stay in his car as he waited for backup to arrive on the scene.
Cunningham instead chose to ignore the request and exited his vehicle to question the officer about why he was pulled over. A fight quickly ensued, at which point Cunningham allegedly took the officer’s gun and began to pistol-whip him with it until he was unconscious.
Cunningham has a long criminal history dating back to 1999.
