Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) explained that the Bill of Rights is not controlled by public opinion polls, that our rights do not come from government but from God Himself, and that the 2nd Amendment exists for self-protection and “as a fundamental check on government tyranny.”

“Our country was founded on a radical proposition, which is that our rights don’t come from government, they come from God,” said Senator Cruz in a recent interview with Guns.com.

Senator Cruz made his remarks in response to questions from Guns.com Editor Daniel Terrill about public opinion polls on gun rights and gun control.

As Cruz explained, what matters is what the Bill of Rights says, not what a poll says. “It doesn’t matter what might be popular at the moment,” he said. “We’ve seen regimes across the face of the Earth come and take away people’s guns, strip away their rights to defend themselves. And sometimes it’s been very popular.”

“And yet it is an inevitable prelude to tyranny,” said the senator.

The 2nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution reads, “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”
