Freedom From Religion Foundation Tries to Drive Out Religious Expression from Two Florida School Districts
< < Go Back
It was kids’ play back in the ’50s when a bully like Eddie Haskell picked on Beaver Cleaver in the popular Leave It to Beaver television sitcom. But in today’s age of hostility, the bullies are Goliaths and they’re waging an all-out war to cleanse Christianity from our nation’s schools. And they won’t stop until they’ve destroyed our religious liberty.
“This is a calculated assault on freedom of religion and freedom of speech in our public education system,” said Liberty Institute General Counsel Jeff Mateer. “And it’s forming an America of eroding moral values, social breakdown, and weakened faith.”
USING BULLYING TACTICS TO DRIVE OUT RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
Earlier this year, FFRF sent the Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Florida, a letter listing allegations of “rampant religious activity” at Apopka High School, asserting they are “violations of the Establishment Clause which the district must remedy immediately.”
In addition to demanding that the district prohibit teachers and coaches from praying with students, take down banners with Bible verses at the high school’s football field, and cease production of T-shirts with religious messages and references that are combined with the high school’s official logo, FFRF cited the very presence of the school’s volunteer football chaplain as “inappropriate and unconstitutional” on the district’s behalf.
