“I’m against bullying, but I’m getting damn tired of it being used as a mantra for everything and the ills of the world. All most people have to do is grow a pair and stick up for them damn selves.”

Frustrated by the societal attitude towards bullying, Porterville, CA Mayor Cameron Hamilton recently told a city council meeting that bullying victims need to “grow a pair.” The city council was debating the idea of “Safe Zones” that would be placed around the city to serve as places of refuge for bullied children. The ‘Safe Zone’ proposal was a student initiative started by Burton Middle School students to help victims obtain help according to the The Fresno Bee.

City councilwoman Virginia Gurrola responded, “It is hard to stand up and ‘grow a pair’ when you’re maybe a 10-year-old little girl,” to which Hamilton replied, “then maybe the other 10-year-olds that think they want to stop bullying will stand up for her.”

Hamilton later defended his comments, telling The Fresno Bee, ““I could have used less colorful language” but added, “We need to stand up. These bullies can’t bully people unless we let them do so.”
