The developing controversy over a World War I memorial in Maryland … has now escalated to a new level as the American Humanist Association officially filed a lawsuit, seeking to have the memorial cross torn down.

The anti-faith group is suing the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission claiming the cross violates the so-called “separation of church and state.”

For nearly 90 years, the 40-foot cement cross sat in the median of an intersection in Bladensburg, Maryland, without complaint. Dedicated in 1925, the memorial—known as the Peace Cross— honors the memory of 49 residents of Prince George’s County who died serving our country in World War I.

Town administrator John E. Moss told The Washington Times that the cross has “historic and patriotic” significance to the county and does not endorse any particular religion.
