Anti-Faith Group Goes After Kansas Elementary School
< < Go Back
Americans United for Separation of Church and State (AU) claims that a cross atop Spearville Elementary School is a violation of the so-called “separation of church and state.”
The school, originally built as a Catholic school soon after the conclusion of World War I, was donated to the town of Spearville in 1975. The humble cross remained atop the historic building—without issue—until earlier this year when a local resident complained.
AU is demanding the cross be removed or it will proceed with a lawsuit. Right now, the Board of Education is not taking any action in the matter.
“Kansans need to know this atheist group is being deceptive in its suggestion that the Constitution requires Americans to whitewash over our country’s religious heritage,” said Liberty Institute Senior Counsel Jeremiah Dys. “We encourage Spearville Superintendent Stegman and the Board of Education to courageously continue not to be intimidated by AU’s bullying tactics and to know that they have a friend in Liberty Institute, willing to defend them for free.”
