Assassination roils birthplace of Arab Spring. Assassination Is Second This Year to Threaten Democratic Transition

The assassination of a secularist politician involved in drafting Tunisia’s new constitution sparked anti-government protests and threatened further instability, the second such killing this year to disrupt the nation’s attempts to cement its transition to democracy.

Parliamentarian Mohammed Brahmi was shot multiple times by gunmen riding a motorbike outside his home in a suburb of the capital on Thursday, members of his People’s Movement Party told local media. It wasn’t clear who was responsible for the shooting.

Members of Mr. Brahmi’s political bloc went on the airwaves to accuse radical Islamists of the attack and charge the government, which is led by the religious Ennahda party, with shirking its duty to protect its citizens.
