House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said he saw no “new movement” in an approximately hour-long meeting at the White House with President Biden and congressional leaders on Wednesday, as lawmakers run out of time to avoid a calamitous default.

Emerging from the Oval Office, McCarthy and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) blamed the White House for rejecting the GOP’s proposal to slash spending in exchange for lifting the debt limit. Lawmakers have until sometime in June to lift the debt ceiling, which sets the maximum amount the U.S. can borrow, or court what experts say could be a global economic panic.

“Everybody in this meeting reiterated the positions they were at,” McCarthy said. “I didn’t see any new movement.”
