Georgia Grand Jury Cites Possible Perjury in Trump Election Probe

Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney on Thursday released parts of a special grand-jury report saying unidentified witnesses may have lied to jurors investigating former President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia.
“A majority of the Grand Jury believes that perjury may have been committed by one or more witnesses testifying before it,” one excerpt of a report written by the jurors and released by the judge said. “The grand jury recommends that the District Attorney seek appropriate indictments for such crimes where the evidence is compelling.”
The records released Thursday consisted of nine pages and included the report’s introduction and conclusion.
The special grand jury was assembled at the request of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a Democrat, who in early 2021 launched an investigation into efforts to influence Georgia’s election results.
Ms. Willis, who has the complete report, now can call a regular grand jury to seek indictments.
The grand jury of 26 Fulton County residents, impaneled in May 2022, used its subpoena power to compel witnesses to testify.
Ms. Willis didn’t seek to compel Mr. Trump’s testimony in her investigation, but legal experts have said he is a potential target of the inquiry. Mr. Trump has said the investigation is a “witch hunt” and that he violated no laws.
B.J. Van Gundy, the Georgia GOP’s first vice chairman, said he expected state party leaders to be indicted, adding those facing criminal charges would undergo a lot of stress in facing what he said would be a groundless and futile prosecution.
“It’s a very partisan game being played by the Fulton County D.A.,” said Mr. Van Gundy, who wasn’t one of the alternate electors. “It’s going to cost a lot of money and time and energy and it’s going to put a lot of money in lawyers’ pockets. But it’s going to be all to no avail.”
