Buses Bringing Migrants to D.C. From Texas, Arizona Tax Nonprofits, Local Governments

Mayors of Washington and New York ask for federal funding to help shelter influx of asylum seekers.
A continuing effort by Texas and Arizona to bus asylum-seeking migrants from the southern border to the nation’s capital is beginning to strain city government and local nonprofits.
The mayors of Washington and New York City are asking the Biden administration for financial assistance to help with the influx. Between three and five buses, each carrying as many as 50 migrants, have been arriving from the southern border to Washington’s Union Station each day, officials said.
Most aren’t intending to stay in Washington but rather are using the buses as free transport to reach their final destinations—most often New York or Miami, migrant advocates say. Still, the steady stream has left local immigrant-rights organizations scrambling to find temporary shelter and money for other care.
“The increase has created issues for us and our ability to receive every bus,” said Abel Nunez, executive director of the nonprofit Central American Resource Center in Washington, which assists migrants in reaching their final destinations.
