The Arizona legislature failed to extend Voter ID protections to vote-by-mail this week. In a 29-31 vote, SB 1713 was defeated on the House floor.

Currently, Arizona voters are required to provide voter ID to vote by person, but no such protection is required when voting by mail. Rep. Michelle Udall and Rep. Joel John were the only two Republicans to vote against this bill.

While the failure of SB 1713 was certainly a setback, the Arizona legislature did pass HB 2792, to prohibit government officials from mailing early ballots to voters who never requested them.
