House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced his opposition Tuesday to a bipartisan deal to establish an independent commission to investigate the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, in part because he said its scope should include other acts of political violence.

But his counterpart in the Senate, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) did not follow suit, declaring Tuesday afternoon that the Senate GOP is “undecided at this point” and is “willing to listen” to arguments in favor of the panel.

On Tuesday afternoon, some Republican senators — such as Mike Rounds of South Dakota — emerged from a group lunch expressing support for an independent investigation focused exclusively on the events of Jan. 6.

“We clearly had an insurrection on that particular day, and I don’t want it to be swept under any rug,” Rounds told reporters, according to NBC News’s Sahil Kapur.

In the House, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is expected to have more than enough support to pass the legislation when it comes to a vote Wednesday.
