What to Know: Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Texans faced both criminal penalties and excessive fines for things that may be otherwise everyday activities, like riding a bike or getting your hair cut. Senate Bill 1616 offers a positive step to protecting Texans in the future by removing these criminal penalties.
The TPPF Take: “Failing to wear a face mask or choosing to participate in everyday activities should never lead to criminal penalties and jail time,” says TPPF’s Shelby Sterling. “Local governments abused emergency powers to threaten Texans into forced compliance.”
