Remember a time in the pandemic when the ventilator was everything — the most important lifesaving miracle device, the critical last line of defense, that every hospital, every nation must have in abundance?
Yet on the first anniversary of the first covid-19 deaths here, nurses and doctors working in intensive care units across Britain report a dramatic change. They say a growing number of desperately ill patients are refusing ventilators, seeing them as scary contraptions to be avoided at all costs.
