This is a great lesson in COVID numbers & media reporting of same

The Washington Post reported yesterday that S.D. Gov. Kristi Noem says she nailed the pandemic response. Fauci: The numbers ‘don’t lie.’

Ok, lets look at the numbers, using only WaPo reporting of the numbers.

Kristi Noem claimed: “South Dakota is the only state in America that never ordered a single business or church to close,” she said to applause and cheers. “We never instituted a shelter-in-place order. We never mandated that people wear masks. We never even defined what an essential business is.”

WaPo says, Despite Noem’s claims of success, her state has reported more infections per resident than any state besides North Dakota. Wow, that does sound impactful. Especially when you believe, or are told to believe, that this disease is a death sentence.

WaPo also reports that South Dakota ranks second nationally for the most coronavirus cases reported per capita, eighth for total deaths per capita and ninth for peak hospitalized count per capita, according to data gathered and analyzed by The Washington Post.

WaPo, let me get this straight.

  • SD deaths per capita are 7 below the leaders who put the most draconian policies and lock downs in place.
  • SD is 8 below those same states in peak hospitalizations.
  • With out lock downs SD did much better in deaths and hospitalizations than the lock down states, would I be reading that correct?
  • Also, that would mean other deaths from suicide, untreated heart attacks, and other deaths of despair, were also down since she didn’t lock down her state.
  • School children are not suffering from being out of school.
  • That would also mean businesses and the people of her state who run them are not out of business and broke.
  • That means that people are not leaving SD in droves like they are from NY, ILL & California.

If so, WaPo, Gov Noem is not wrong, she is correct about SD handling of the pandemic.

WaPo, why don’t you want a successful model like this to be reported & celebrated? Why don’t you want people to know that a COVID case does not mean death? Is it because you are invested in controlling the population through false, misleading and incomplete messaging? Is it because you only want Democrat politicians to get credit for COVID actions?
