What to Know: One state lawmaker’s top goal for the upcoming legislative session is “to make sure there aren’t any cuts” to public education funding. The bid to keep school spending elevated comes in spite of an 8.1% unemployment rate, mass business closures, and long lines at Texas food banks.

The TPPF Take: Every Texas family has had to adjust their spending habits. Now it’s time for public schools to do the same.

“Public schools must spend less. Texas taxpayers cannot afford otherwise,” says TPPF’s James Quintero. “State lawmakers have a responsibility to bring school spending in line with today’s economic realities and better protect those who’ve been hard-hit by the pandemic, especially the elderly and the low-income.”
