What to Know: Recently, Austin officials and non-profits came together to for a “week of action to end homelessness.” (Spoiler Alert: They didn’t.)
The TPPF Take: Austin officials will never “end homelessness” until they address the root causes of so much of it—substance abuse, addiction, untreated mental illness.
“Austin’s failed ‘Housing First’ approach specifically denies funding and support for homelessness agencies and ministries that require people to address their underlying issues,” explains TPPF Senior Fellow Michele Steeb. “What’s needed is a ‘People First’ approach that supports people in addressing the root causes of their homelessness.”
