President Trump on Saturday escalated his criticism of the Food and Drug Administration’s pandemic response, tweeting a conspiracy theory about coronavirus treatments and stoking doubts about the agency’s decision to pull its emergency approval of the drug hydroxychloroquine.

In an early morning tweet, Trump made the baseless claim that “the deep state, or whoever,” in the FDA was “making it very difficult for drug companies to get people in order to test vaccines and therapeutics.” He tagged FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn, who was appointed by Trump last year, saying “they are hoping to delay the answer” until after the November elections.
