If there were ever a point at which President Trump believed himself to be necessarily bound by accuracy, that time has long passed. It’s likely that he generally thinks he is merely nudging outward the boundaries of reality even when he’s far outside them. But he clearly knows that he can simply push an idea out into the world and watch his supporters and defenders attach themselves to it, working to build up pearls from any grain of sand.

There’s very little comparison between the influenza virus that emerged that year and the current coronavirus pandemic except that in both cases, a new virus emerged …
