The Nairobi Summit

2019 Marks the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) in Cairo, where 179 governments adopted a landmark Programme of Action. Ever since, the Netherlands – both government and civil society – has supported this agenda. From 12-14 November 2019, the Government of Kenya, the Government of Denmark and UNFPA are convening the ICPD25 Nairobi Summit, a high-level conference to mobilise political will and financial commitments to implement the ICPD Programme of Action. The outcome of the Summit will be a set of global commitments, which will be centered around achieving zero unmet need for family planning information and services, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero sexual and gender-based violence and harmful practices against women and girls. Countries are requested to formulate specific national commitments focused on the implementation of the ICPD, to be presented in Nairobi. Many countries can built upon the ICPD25 review process, and the national reports that were prepared for the regional ICPD reviews (held in 2018).
