A former Department of Education official advocated the measure following Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos denouncing debt forgiveness proposals.
The movement to forgive student loan repayment is gaining traction. A Politico poll found that 56 percent of registered voters support a plan to eliminate student loan debt owed to lenders and the federal government.
But Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has been critical of these student loan forgiveness proposals. “Who do they think is actually going to pay for these? It’s going to be two of the three Americans that aren’t going to college paying for the one out of three that do,” said DeVos. Earlier this week, she dismissed student loan forgiveness plans as “crazy.”
