Eco-Terrorist in El Paso

At issue were the rantings contained in a “manifesto” allegedly written by the El Paso shooter containing the reasons for his malicious act. In this manifesto, he took occasion to spew out his bigoted, anti-Hispanic vitriol as one of the underlying reasons – and 2020 contenders such as Beto O’Rourke, Pete Buttigieg, Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, among others, were quick to take cheap shots at the President for supposedly fueling this gunman’s bigotry.

Fortunately, most Americans are fair-minded. They will see this sort of grandstanding for what it is – shameless politics. But what’s particularly irksome in this case is that if these presidential candidates are going to point fingers, then it ought to be very careful it doesn’t come back on them. That’s because this so-called manifesto does not just point to anti-immigration as a motivating factor, but also deep green ecology.

Take, for example, this passage:

The decimation of the environment is creating a massive burden for future generations. Corporations are heading the destruction of our environment by shamelessly over harvesting resources… Consumer culture is creating thousands of tons of unnecessary plastic waste and electronic waste, and recycling to help slow this down is almost non-existent. Urban sprawl creates inefficient cities which unnecessarily destroys millions of acres of land. We even use god knows how many trees worth of paper towels just wipe water off our hands … most of y’all are just too stubborn to change your lifestyle. So the next logical step is to decrease the number of people in America using resources. If we can get rid of enough people, then our way of life can become more sustainable.

This isn’t the first time there have been other similar eco-terrorist shooters, like those of the Christchurch mosque shooter and the shooter in Norway who killed 77 and injured hundreds more people in July, 2011. What then, should we point the blame of this attack and others on the fearmongering of liberal politicians on subjects like climate change, overpopulation and resource depletion? No, and we won’t, because these are the rantings of a madman, and tragedy is not the time to score political points.

The simple fact is that these were deeply disturbed individuals whose hearts were filled with hate.

To the Democratic candidates using these events for political gain: your political posturing is horrible, and it shouldn’t be done on either side of the political aisle.

Wanton violence has plagued mankind from its beginning, and even here in our great nation we are not immune to it. If there are lessons to be drawn from these events, let us learn them by working together and providing comfort to our fellow Americans.
