Defending the party’s progressive wing against the president’s attacks steals attention from crucial topics.

For Democrats, one of the problems with Trump Derangement Syndrome—the obsession with all the controversies the president creates—is that it detracts attention from other important topics.

Such as figuring out how they might win back blue-collar voters lost to President Trump in 2016.

This is such an obviously important task for Democrats that one might think it would be a preoccupation—perhaps even their real obsession. But right now it is taking a back seat to defending the party’s progressive wing. That is probably how the president likes it, and probably why he is busy keeping attention focused on his attacks on four liberal Democratic congresswomen of color.
