What to Know: Louisiana has an alternative to the Affordable Care Act almost ready to go.

“The momentous-sounding Health Care Coverage for Louisiana Families Protection Act would use high-risk pools to cover residents struggling with pre-existing conditions — an issue that has bedeviled Republicans in Washington,” the Washington Times reports. “In Louisiana, though, the Republican idea won backing from both parties and cleared the state Senate on Monday evening on a 38-0 vote. It now heads toward near certain approval in the state House, where the speaker is a co-sponsor, and would then reach the desk of Gov. John Bel Edwards, a Democrat who will face a tricky election-year decision of whether to sign or veto the bill.”

The TPPF Take: States need not wait for Congress or even the U.S. Supreme Court to fix Obamacare; they should be free to enact their own solutions.

“Congress should step up its efforts and free the states to pursue their own alternatives to the ACA,” says TPPF’s Rob Henneke, who argued the federal case against the ACA. “Louisianans know what they want and need, just as Texans and even Californians do. The states should be free to innovate.”
